Gianfranco Lanci may be gone from Acer, but the PC maker’s former chief is not forgotten — not financially, at least. The company is suing the exec over non-compete violations, after he jumped ship around this time last year. The exec recently landed a gig at Lenovo as head of its Europe, Middle East and Africa division, after doing some time as a consultant for the company .

Amidst the madness that was CES , Acer quietly snuck its Iconia Tab A510 onto the showroom floor, tucking the tablet into the folds of NVIDIA’s booth. While the company was more than willing to fess up to the slate’s specs — quad-core Tegra 3 processor, skinned Ice Cream Sandwich UX, 1280 x 800 display — little in the way of pricing and availability were revealed.
Sleek and svelte Ultrabooks and tablets might have stolen the limelight from ye old netbook, but that doesn’t mean the less glamorous category is completely bereft of all signs of life. Take for example, Acer’s Aspire One 722 . Sure, the 1GHz AMD C-50 powered, Radeon HD 6250 wielding netbook’s internals got more pizzazz in an updated Europe-only edition , but that didn’t stop AT&T from taking the original and giving it a new beginning thanks to shiny new internal WWAN module.
So, the mystery quad-core tablet shown off by Acer at CES has a name… kinda
Ultrabooks aren’t necessarily just for those that want tiny ultraportables — Acer also thinks the mainstream consumer is going to be keen on the extended battery life and slimmer profile afforded by Intel’s latest mobile platform.
Acer brought it’s A-game to CES, by which we mean the “world’s thinnest Ultrabook.” The 13.3-inch Acer Aspire S5 just launched and we got our mitts all-over its super-svelte magnesium and aluminum exterior. We’ve got some photos in the gallery below, with more to come — people literally elbowing each other in the gut to get shots of this thing.
Acer’s just previewed its latest entry to cloud computing, aptly titled AcerCloud, allowing users to access multimedia and data files remotely whether or not their main PC is asleep. The feature will be available free of cost on all future consumer Acer PCs .
Wondering just how hot the Ultrabook token is here at CES?
Not surprisingly, Acer’s jumping on the quickly-expanding Ultrabook bandwagon here at CES 2012, with the Aspire S5 being the first out of the chute. It’s a 13.3-incher that’ll check it at under three pounds, offering up Instant On functionality, a magnesium-aluminum alloy cover (in Onyx Black), HDMI / USB 3.0 / Thunderbolt (!) ports and an SSD for good measure. We’re told that it’ll start shipping in Q2 of this year, but other details remain under wraps.
