AT&T reports Q1 earnings: $31.8 billion in revenue, 5.5 million smartphones sold

Sure, there was no new iPhone to boost its smartphone sales this quarter, but the carrier still managed to push 5.5 million of the devices out the door, while activating 4.3 million Apple-branded handsets. The company beat analyst predictions by raking in $31.8 billion in revenue and pocketing $3.6 billion of that as income, up from $3.4 billion over the same time period last year

FCC begins tracking wireless carriers’ implementation of bill shock notifications

If you’ve ever mistaken your wireless bill for your phone number, only to discover a dollar sign in front of all those digits, you’re far from alone. The CTIA estimates that one in six mobile subscribers have experienced bill shock, but thanks to the efforts of the nation’s wireless carriers — along with a bit of help from the FCC — consumers will start to receive notifications of any potential overages , along with alerts when the threshold has been crossed. The program is still in its infancy, but the FCC has launched a website to track wireless carriers’ implementation of the notification system, which will alert consumers to any voice, data, SMS or international roaming charges

AT&T opens Watson API up to developers

Admit it, you don’t have nearly enough opportunities to talk back to your phone. AT&T is giving you more. The company today announced that it will be offering its Watson real-time speech-to-text software to developers as APIs aimed at a number of different application types — things like web search, question and answer apps and anything that uses AT&T’s U-Verse TV services.

AT&T confirms HTC One X to land May 6th for $199

If you were waiting for confirmation as to when you might be able to get your hands on the HTC One X in the US, circle May the 6th on your calendar. AT&T has just confirmed that this is when the flagship handset will launch, at a price of $199 (with a two year commitment.) It’s the dual-core LTE version, of course, and is also the first phone to launch with Ice Cream Sandwich on the network.
