On the off chance your cell phone is of the decidedly dumb variety, Mountain View’s engineers have worked out an alternative solution to keep your Google + circles intersecting. Initially available only for the U.S. and Indian markets at the time of the social service’s launch , the search giant’s expanding the reach of its SMS feature to over 41 additional countries, giving users the option to post updates, as well as receive and reply to notifications via text.

AT&T continues to slowly spread its flavor of 4G LTE throughout the land, tonight crossing two St. Louis and Staten Island off of its spring / early summer expansion list . The timing is favorable for anyone that gave up high speed wireless internet access for Lent, however everyone else still waiting for access will be looking on in jealousy

Google’s Flight Search — which was conjured up after its acquisition of ITA — has been giving Kayak and Bing Travel a run for their respective dollars here in the States, but an airline search engine is only as good as its reach. This week, the company announced that over 500 airports outside of the US are now being included in the results (but, sadly, only if you start in the US), and while no specific promises were given, Google says that it’s “working hard on expanding [its] global coverage and adding more routes in the future.” Oh, and for those looking to disconnect in Samoa , APW totally made the cut here.

Talk about a New Years Resolution: ZTE’s head of handset strategy Lv Qianhao, in an interview with Reuters , mentioned that in 2012 his company expects to double the number of smartphone shipments made last year, as well as expand its Windows Phone efforts. While we’re not completely certain as to what that specific number was, Lv stated that it far exceeded its target of 12 million

Last we heard, LTE was supposed to land on US Cellular last November , but months passed with nary a peep on the carrier’s progress. Finally, a little ray of light shone from its official Twitter account as it confirmed today that high-speed mobile broadband is still on the radar, but its deployment was simply pushed back to the end of March, when we’ll see the first LTE-capable tablet arrive. For those craving to have the service on something a little smaller, the company also told us to expect the first smartphone in April

Accuracy is generally an important consideration in computer chips, but a team of researchers led by Rice University are touting a new “inexact” chip (dubbed PCMOS) that they say could lead to as much as a fifteen-fold increase in efficiency. Their latest work, which won a best paper award at a recent ACM conference, builds on years of research in the field from the university, and is already moving far beyond the lab — some inexact hardware is being used in the “i-slate” educational tablet developed by the Rice-NTU Institute for Sustainable and Applied Infodynamics, 50,000 of which are expected to wind up in India’s Mahabubnagar school district over the next three years.
While the main thing that would make Raspberry Pi’s diminutive $25 / $35 Linux setups better would be if we could get our hands on them faster , the team behind it is already working on improvements like this prototype camera seen above.

There’s been hints of it coming as early as February , but we now have a smoking gun at the FCC: the Galaxy S III is coming to T-Mobile. A Samsung SGH-T999 has popped up at the agency sporting newly added 1,700MHz AWS support that’s the telltale sign of a T-Mobile device, along with the T999 name itself (the T989 is the network’s Galaxy S II ). It also totes 850MHz and 1,900MHz WCDMA bands being used for HSPA+ data rather than just voice, a clue that the phone is ready for refarmed GSM spectrum
