Kiss Aero goodbye: Latest Windows 8 build reveals minimalistic desktop UI (update)

It’s safe to say that anticipation is high for the upcoming Windows 8 Release Preview , which will become available in the first week of June. While we’re still curious to see if Microsoft can better integrate the desktop and Metro environments of its latest operating system, the company has now revealed a significant change to the desktop portion of Windows 8 — a completely restyled visual appearance. As you might remember from the Consumer Preview , window borders and widgets featured a simplified and subdued look in comparison to the glass-like materials of Aero, which Microsoft now calls “dated and cheesy.” With the latest refresh, however, the company has pushed its modernistic philosophy even further to reveal a spartan (yet functional) interface that draws less attention to the chrome elements and allows the user to focus more on content.

Microsoft reveals the fourth version of Windows 8: Enterprise

We’re sure some of you aren’t as interested in the Windows 8 versions destined for workplace drudgery as you are the home editions , but admit it, the IT guy inside of you is a little curious. As detailed in an official blog post, the new unique feature in Windows 8 Enterprise is Windows To Go, which we think of as Windows on a stick. Basically it allows you to run your corporate image on a home PC or other personal devices — the opposite of that USB disk you carry to work with portable versions of your favorite unsanctioned apps.

Canonical prepping to launch Ubuntu as smartphone OS?

Crawling the job posting boards over at Canonical turns up a pretty interesting position, one for a Business Development Manager (Ubuntu Phone OS). Now, we’re not quite ready to jump to any conclusions here, but the wording of the listing is quite intriguing. The group is looking for a “business development lead to engage and develop strong relationships with industry partners in the run up to the launch of Ubuntu as a smartphone operating system,” with the goal of “establish[ing] a commercial ecosystem around Ubuntu as a smartphone OS.” Does this mean that Ubuntu is preparing to take on Android and iOS in the battle for smartphone supremacy (or, more likely, take on Windows Phone in a competition of also rans)?

Windows Vista support isn’t an eternal flame, but from tomorrow it’s ‘extended’

Remember how we told you that Windows Vista was getting extended support ? Well here’s a little PSA: that new phase begins tomorrow, and it’s slightly different to what Redmond calls ‘mainstream’ support. You’ll still get security updates until April 2017, but according to Microsoft’s general support policy you’ll lose certain other benefits.
