China may ship more smartphones than the the US this year

The rapid modernization of China shouldn’t really come as a shock anymore. But, you might be a bit surprised to hear that the venerable IDC is predicting the world’s most populous country will soon surpass the US in smartphone shipments. The research agency is predicting the People’s Republic will account for 20.7 percent of the global smartphone market by the end of 2012, narrowly edging out the US by 0.1 percent.

RIM gets funky, patents fuel cell manufacture for mobile devices

If the engineers in Waterloo have their way, your future mobile handset may be able to recharge itself on-the-go with the help of fuel cells . A new patent from RIM describes a method of manufacture that sandwiches a fuel cell assembly between the keyboard and printed circuit board, wherein the fuel cell ventilates through the keyboard (and likely, channels in the keys themselves). The claims describe the PCB as being formed on the fuel cell — perhaps in effort to reduce size — to which a fuel tank is then located beneath the printed circuit board

Gartner pegs Samsung as China’s top smartphone maker, ranks Apple fifth overall

Analysts at the research firm Gartner have come out and crowned Samsung as the most popular smartphone producer in China. The Korean manufacturer beat out others such as Nokia, Huawei, ZTE and Apple to score the title, and now boasts a rather impressive 24.3 percent market share in the country. While the iPhone 4S is portrayed as the most desired handset in China, Gartner suggests its limited availability with carriers played a large role in Samsung‘s achievement

Samsung heralds European arrival of Ice Cream Sandwich for Galaxy S II

After that March 10th mishap , Samsung reaffirmed to us that it’d deliver Android 4.0 for its GT-I9100 Galaxy S II when it was darn good and ready — well folks, the company appears ready.

IDC: iPhone becomes top-selling cellphone in Japan over the Fall quarter, gives Sharp a run for its money

Think the iPhone is popular in the States? Well, the device is taking off in Asia as well. Based on a report from research firm IDC Japan, Apple snagged the largest share of mobile phone shipments in the country for the quarter at 26.6%, ending the market dominance of local manufacturers

ZTE Fury coming to Sprint on March 11th for $20 after rebate

We’ve previously heard rumblings of the ZTE Fury’s pending arrival on the Now Network , but now you can safely circle your calendars — in pencil, anyway — for a March 11th debut. For those unfamiliar, it’ll be a rather low-end smartphone targeted at the budget market, where $20 (after a $50 mail-in rebate) will snag an Android 2.3 handset that packs a 1GHz processor, a 3.5-inch touchscreen and 5MP camera

ASUS claims it may be among first to get Android 5.0, confirms Jelly Bean moniker

We’ve seen some pretty incredible smartphones and technologies at MWC , but it goes without saying that one of the hottest topics at the show was Android, and speculation over the release and alias of its next-gen operating system. Based on Google’s update schedule, it’s within reason to expect Android 5.0 to hit within the next year — but which popular confection will bear the honor or representing the latest OS flavor? There’s been little doubt that the jelly bean will fill that role, and now ASUS has confirmed to TechRadar not only that delectable moniker — Jelly Bean — but also that the company will likely be among the first to get the new OS.

Nokia is the largest Windows Phone maker in the world, after one quarter

While we can’t really say that we’re surprised, Nokia has snagged the top spot for Windows Phone devices. Strategy Analytics reports that the Finnish smartphone maker now sits atop the global charts for the Microsoft mobile OS after being in the game for just one quarter. Nokia overtook HTC and Samsung to claim a 33% market share with 0.9 million out of the 2.7 million units shipped in Q4.
